5 Things to Do in Vancouver WA This Weekend — Fry Bread, Roses, Baseball & More (May 29–31, 2026)

A 150-year-old mill making fresh fry bread, the largest rose show in Washington State, opening night baseball in Ridgefield, a free AAPI martial arts showcase, and Portland in full bloom — your weekend guide is here.

There is something about the last weekend of May in Southwest Washington that feels like a full exhale. The spring light is long and golden, the air smells like freshly cut grass and something baking somewhere, and Clark County puts on some of its most genuinely distinctive events of the entire year. This weekend you can stand inside a working 1876 water-powered grist mill eating fresh fry bread made from flour ground on-site. You can walk the largest rose show in all of Washington State — completely free. You can watch competitive wood bat baseball under the open sky in Ridgefield. You can watch a 2X World Champion martial artist perform live at Vancouver Mall as part of AAPI Heritage Month. And if you feel like crossing the river, Portland's Rose Festival is in full swing.

These five events are spread across Vancouver, Ridgefield, Woodland, and Portland — together they paint a picture of exactly what makes this corner of the Pacific Northwest so worth calling home. For more on the area, explore my guides to Vancouver, Washington, why people are moving to Vancouver, WA, and Vancouver WA neighborhoods to watch in 2026.

Cedar Creek Grist Mill Fry Bread Day — Woodland, WA

This one is unlike anything else in the region — and that's not an exaggeration. Cedar Creek Grist Mill is a working 1876 water-powered grist mill tucked into a forested river basin near Woodland, Washington. It runs entirely on the energy of rushing water — no gas, no electricity. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of only two remaining grain-grinding mills in all of Washington State that has kept its original structural integrity, grinds with stones, and is still water-powered. Volunteers run the whole operation, welcoming visitors from around the world every Saturday.

On the last Saturday of May, they host Fry Bread Day — one of their beloved monthly food events where fresh bread is made right on-site using flour milled that very day. You walk in, watch the giant pulleys and belts whirl above and below as a volunteer explains how a 150-year-old mill still turns grain into flour, and then you eat fresh fry bread made from that same flour. It is free. All of it. The mill is also set next to a hand-rebuilt covered bridge spanning Cedar Creek, making it one of the most photographed spots in southwest Washington. If you've lived in this area for years and never made the drive, this is the weekend to go.

What to Expect

  • Fresh fry bread made from flour milled on-site that same day — completely free
  • A working demonstration of the 1876 water-powered grist mill in full operation
  • One of only two surviving original grain-grinding mills in Washington State
  • A picturesque setting next to a hand-rebuilt covered bridge over Cedar Creek
  • An all-volunteer operation that welcomes visitors from around the world every Saturday

💡 Pro Tip from a Local

From Vancouver, take I-5 north to Woodland and follow signs east — it's about a 30-minute drive and the road takes you through some beautiful rural southwest Washington farmland. Arrive close to 1 PM if you want to catch the full milling demonstration before the fry bread comes out. There's a scenic loop drive in the area if you want to make a longer outing of it. Bring the kids — this is hands-on Pacific Northwest history that no screen can replicate.

71st Annual Rose Show: A Rosy Affair — Fort Vancouver Rose Society

The Fort Vancouver Rose Society has been nurturing this community tradition for 73 years, and the 71st Annual Rose Show — A Rosy Affair — is their signature event. This is not a small garden club gathering. This is the largest rose show in the entire state of Washington, held at the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds in Ridgefield. If roses are your thing, this is a bucket-list afternoon. If roses aren't your thing, give it a chance anyway — the visual impact of a competition-level Pacific Northwest rose show in peak spring bloom is genuinely stunning.

Visitors can walk through a spectacular competition display covering hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, old garden roses, shrub roses, climbers, miniatures, minifloras, micro-miniatures, floral arrangements, and photography. Judging follows current American Rose Society standards. New this year is a Garden Market where local vendors sell rose care products and gardening supplies, and rose care experts from the Society will be on hand to answer questions. The award and trophy ceremony is at 3 PM. Both parking and admission are completely free, and novice exhibitors and youth under 18 are welcome to enter.

What to Expect

  • The largest rose show in Washington State — a stunning display of competition-level blooms
  • Dozens of rose categories including hybrid teas, climbers, miniatures, and floral arrangements
  • A brand-new Garden Market with local vendors selling rose care and gardening products
  • Rose care experts from the Society available to answer questions throughout the event
  • Award and trophy ceremony at 3 PM — a highlight worth staying for
  • Free admission, free parking, no entry fee for exhibitors

💡 Pro Tip from a Local

The Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds is off NE Delfel Rd in Ridgefield — easy parking and well-signed. Since the Rose Show runs 1–4 PM and the Raptors open at 6:35 PM just a few miles away, you can do both in one evening without rushing. Bring a camera — the competition blooms are genuinely worth photographing. If you're a gardener looking to learn, the Society experts at the Garden Market are an incredible free resource.

Ridgefield Raptors Home Games — Opening Series

Ridgefield Raptors Home Games — Opening Series

There is very little in Clark County that beats a summer evening at the Ridgefield Outdoor Recreational Complex watching the Raptors play wood bat baseball under the open Pacific Northwest sky. The Ridgefield Raptors are a collegiate summer wood bat team, meaning the players are college athletes who compete during the summer using traditional wood bats instead of aluminum — the same format that the pros use. It produces a completely different sound and style of game, and the caliber of play is genuinely excellent.

The RORC is a beautiful, purpose-built outdoor facility in Ridgefield that is one of the best small-venue baseball experiences in the Pacific Northwest. This weekend kicks off a home series with three consecutive home games — Thursday, Friday, and Saturday — all starting at 6:35 PM. If you've got kids who play baseball, if you're a sports fan looking for an affordable, relaxed evening out, or if you just want to sit in the fresh air and watch good baseball, there is no better way to spend a May evening in Clark County.

What to Expect

  • Collegiate wood bat baseball — the same format the pros use, played by elite college athletes
  • Three consecutive home games Thursday through Saturday, all at 6:35 PM
  • A beautiful purpose-built outdoor stadium in Ridgefield — one of the best small venues in the PNW
  • Family-friendly atmosphere with concessions, great sightlines, and plenty of parking
  • An affordable, relaxed evening out that delivers genuinely high-quality baseball

💡 Pro Tip from a Local

Ridgefield is about 20 minutes north of Vancouver on I-5 — a quick, easy drive. Grab tickets in advance at ridgefieldraptors.com; weekend games can sell out when the weather is good. If you do the Rose Show at 1 PM and grab dinner in Ridgefield before a 6:35 PM first pitch, Saturday becomes one of the best all-around days Clark County can offer. Bring a light jacket for when the sun goes down — even in late May, evenings cool off quickly in the PNW.

Martial Arts & Culture Showcase: AAPI Heritage Celebration — Vancouver Mall

📅Saturday, May 30, 2026
1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
📍Vancouver Mall — 8700 NE Vancouver Mall Drive, Vancouver, WA 98662

Martial Arts & Culture Showcase: AAPI Heritage Celebration — Vancouver Mall

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month wraps up in May, and Vancouver Mall is closing it out with a showcase that is genuinely worth your afternoon. The Martial Arts & Culture Showcase brings together live demonstrations from martial arts traditions rooted in Hawaii, Okinawa, and northern China — Kajukenbo, Kung Fu, and multiple Karate styles — alongside cultural performances and community entertainment celebrating the AAPI community throughout Clark County.

The featured guest is Sifu Malia Cropper, owner and head instructor of Camas Martial Arts & Fitness — a new female-owned martial arts gym opening in Camas, Washington. She holds a 5th Degree Black Belt in Kajukenbo, is a 2X World Champion, an athlete member of the United States Martial Arts Team, one of the head coaches of Team Pacific Reign, and a 2017 USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee. Watching a competitor of her caliber demonstrate in a free, walk-in setting is genuinely rare. Also representing are the United States Martial Arts Team (USMAT), Pacific Reign Martial Arts Team, and Eternal Kung Fu of Vancouver. The whole event is free and open to anyone, family-friendly throughout.

What to Expect

  • Live martial arts demonstrations across Kajukenbo, Kung Fu, Karate, and more
  • A featured performance by Sifu Malia Cropper — 2X World Champion and Hall of Fame inductee
  • Performances by the United States Martial Arts Team and Pacific Reign
  • Cultural entertainment celebrating AAPI heritage throughout Clark County
  • Family-friendly, completely free, and open to the public
  • A chance to connect with local martial arts schools and organizations

💡 Pro Tip from a Local

Vancouver Mall is centrally located off NE Vancouver Mall Drive — easy parking, easy in and out. The showcase runs 1–3 PM, making it a perfect Saturday afternoon stop before heading to the Raptors game in Ridgefield at 6:35 PM. If you have kids who do martial arts — or kids who have ever been curious about it — watching a 2X World Champion perform live is something they won't forget. Arrive a few minutes early to get a good viewing spot near the demonstration area.

Portland Rose Festival 2026 — Weekend 2 Continues

Portland Rose Festival 2026 — Weekend 2 Continues

The Portland Rose Festival is now in full swing, and this weekend — the second CityFair weekend of May 30–June 1 — is one of the best times to go. The opening night crowds from last weekend have settled, the full lineup of carnival rides, food vendors, and waterfront entertainment is running smoothly, and Portland's waterfront in late May is about as good as it gets. Thirty minutes south of Vancouver on I-5, it is one of the most accessible major festivals in the country for Clark County residents.

Running since 1907 — 119 years of tradition — the Rose Festival draws more than two million visitors over its three-week run. This weekend features CityFair at Tom McCall Waterfront Park with the full carnival experience along the Willamette River, plus the surrounding events that make the festival more than just a carnival: the Dragon Boat Races, Fleet Week Navy ship tours, art shows, and the buildup to the Grand Floral Starlight Parade on June 6. Walking the waterfront on a sunny late-May afternoon in Portland is a reminder of why this region is so remarkable.

What to Expect This Weekend

  • CityFair in full operation May 30–June 1 — rides, food, games, and entertainment
  • The full Willamette waterfront experience at Tom McCall Waterfront Park
  • Dragon Boat Races and Fleet Week Navy ship tours happening this weekend
  • Free to walk the grounds — CityFair rides require tickets
  • Grand Floral Starlight Parade coming up June 6 — the big finale
  • Just 25–30 minutes from Vancouver via I-5

💡 Pro Tip from a Local

Second weekend crowds are more manageable than opening weekend but the full experience is live. Park in Vancouver and take MAX across the river, or drive early and park in the Pearl District. Dragon Boat Races are one of the most underrated spectator events of the entire festival — arrive at the waterfront in the morning if you want a front-row view. The Grand Floral Starlight Parade on June 6 is the crown jewel if you can only pick one Rose Festival event — plan ahead, it fills up.
