Rainy Day Date Night Ideas in Vancouver, WA (2026)
When the Pacific Northwest rain sets in, date night moves indoors. Here are the best indoor date ideas in Vancouver, WA, from retro bowling alleys and axe throwing in a 1932 firehouse to board game cafes, cooking classes, escape rooms, and a 1936 movie palace.
Let's be honest: in Vancouver, WA, rain isn't a reason to cancel date night. It's just Tuesday. From about October through spring, the gray settles in, and if you wait for a dry evening to have fun, you'll be waiting a while. (If you're new here, my post on what PNW rain season actually feels like sets expectations, and you can always check the National Weather Service Portland forecast.)
The good news? Vancouver has gotten really good at indoor fun. My husband and I have tested a lot of these the hard way, usually soaked from the parking lot. So here's my list of cozy, rain-proof date night ideas, from competitive (axe throwing, I'm looking at you) to low-key (board games and a latte).

Where Can You Go Bowling in Vancouver, WA?
Bowling is the perfect rainy date: warm, a little silly, and it doesn't matter if you're good. Vancouver has a fun mix of classic alleys and newer entertainment centers.
- Allen's Crosley Lanes (2400 E Evergreen Blvd): A family-owned alley that has been around for more than 70 years, with an arcade and bar. OPB recently featured its comeback story. It's retro in the best way and a great pick if you love old-school charm.
- Hazel Dell Lanes (Highway 99, Hazel Dell): Another vintage alley with a lounge and food that regulars rave about. Easy to pair with dinner in Hazel Dell.
- Big Al's (16615 SE 18th St, east Vancouver): More of a full entertainment center, with lanes, an arcade, and a restaurant and bar. The East Vancouver food carts in Big Al's parking lot make it easy to grab dinner first. Good when you want options.
- Round1 Bowling & Arcade (Vancouver Mall): Bowling plus a big arcade, with late hours that make it a solid "the night isn't over yet" stop.
- Tiger Bowl (Battle Ground): A small-town alley worth knowing about if you live up north.
Date tip: Make it a bet. Loser buys dessert.
Where Can You Go Axe Throwing in Vancouver, WA?
Nothing breaks the ice like throwing a hatchet at a wooden target. Axe throwing is surprisingly easy to learn, and the coaches walk you through it.
- Firehouse Axes (3701 Main St, Uptown): Vancouver's first full-service axe-throwing bar and restaurant, set in the city's original 1932 fire station with the historic mural still intact. Reserving a lane gets you a private table for an hour and three styles of axes. They also run game modes like axe tic-tac-toe.
Firehouse Axes is now the only axe-throwing spot in Southwest Washington. There are other options across the river in Portland, but on a rainy night, who wants to drive to Portland? Not me.
Date tip: Check the footwear and age rules before you go, and book a lane ahead on weekends. Firehouse Axes is right on Main Street, so you can walk to dinner in Uptown Village afterward.
Are There Board Game Cafes in Vancouver, WA?
Yes, and they're the coziest rainy-day date there is. Grab a warm drink, pick a game, and settle in.
- Contrarian's Game Cafe (14313 NE 20th Ave, Salmon Creek): A board game shop and cafe in one, serving espresso, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches alongside its game library. It also hosts tabletop events if you want to meet other gamers. If you love this area, read my Salmon Creek neighborhood guide.
- Vault 31 Bar: A bar with both video games and board games, with late hours for a night-owl date.
- BatCave Games: A local game store with a good selection of popular titles.
- Guardian Games (Portland): If you're willing to cross the bridge, this huge game store in Portland's Central Eastside is a destination for serious board gamers.
Good games for two: Ask the staff for two-player recommendations. Cooperative games are great if you'd rather not compete with your date.
What Are the Best Escape Rooms in Vancouver, WA?
An escape room tells you a lot about a relationship in 60 minutes. (Who reads the clues? Who panics? Who quietly solves it?) Vancouver has several good options:
- paradigmQ (14415 SE Mill Plain Blvd, east Vancouver): A local, woman-owned company with rooms designed and built in-house, including a Sasquatch cabin hunt and a murder mystery on a vintage train. Bookings are private, and pricing has been in the low-to-mid $40s per player, with weekend rates a bit higher.
- NW Escape Experience (1503 NE 78th St, Hazel Dell): A highly rated local option.
- Twisted Escape Rooms (Vancouver Mall): Convenient to pair with dinner or Round1 at the mall.
- Cipher Solver Escape Games (11011 NE Fourth Plain Blvd): Another local favorite for puzzle lovers.
Date tip: Book a room for two if it's allowed, so you're not paired with strangers. Choose an easier room for your first try.
A Classic Movie at the Kiggins Theatre
For a truly romantic rainy night, catch a film at the Kiggins Theatre at 1011 Main Street. This single-screen theater opened in 1936 and is one of Vancouver's best examples of Art Deco design. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
The Kiggins shows a mix of new independent films, classics, and special events like comedy nights and themed screenings, and it serves local beer with the popcorn. Check the schedule before you go, since programming changes often.
Make it a night: Grab dinner downtown first, then walk to the show. My guide to downtown Vancouver's wine scene has great pre-movie spots.
More Cozy Indoor Date Ideas When It Rains
Take a cooking class together
Learning something new together beats another night of takeout, and you get dinner out of it. Here are three local spots to try:
- Social Kitchen (1000 Main St, downtown): Hands-on culinary experiences where you cook a multi-course meal with a guide, then sit down at a communal table to eat it, without doing the dishes. Public experiences have themes like Argentine steak night or Spanish paella, and they cap each one at about 20 guests. Bonus: it's right across Main Street from the Kiggins Theatre.
- Class Cooking (downtown): A small cooking school next to Burnt Bridge Cellars winery, run by Kim Mahan. Classes are themed menus, often inspired by her travels, plus wine pairing dinners and guest chef nights. Schedules can be limited, so join her newsletter to hear about the next one.
- Cooking in the Couve with Chef Joe: Hands-on, themed cooking classes taught by a local chef. Check his page for current dates, menus, and locations.
Go wine tasting downtown
Downtown Vancouver and the waterfront have a cluster of tasting rooms within walking distance of each other. Umbrella, two glasses, done. Start with my downtown wine guide.
Visit the Pearson Air Museum
The Pearson Air Museum is part of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, managed by the National Park Service. It's a fun indoor daytime date for history and aviation fans. Check the NPS site for current hours before you go.
Hit the arcade
Round1 at Vancouver Mall and Big Al's both have big arcades. Set a budget, split the tokens, and see who wins more tickets.
Stay in and make it special
Sometimes the best rainy date is at home. Make soup or a Dutch oven dinner together (here are my cozy fall Dutch oven recipes), light some candles, and break out a board game. For takeout inspiration, see where to find the best soup in Vancouver or try one of my favorite pizza date night spots.
3 Easy Rainy Day Date Night Itineraries
Downtown and Uptown: the classic
Throw axes at Firehouse Axes on Main Street, walk to dinner in Uptown Village, then catch a late show at the Kiggins Theatre. Everything is within a short drive or a damp walk. Want to cook your own dinner instead? Book an early experience at Social Kitchen, then cross the street to the Kiggins.
East Vancouver: the competitive one
Try an escape room at paradigmQ, then head to Big Al's. Grab dinner from the East Vancouver food carts in the parking lot, then go inside for bowling and a round at the arcade. More on the area in my guide to living on the east side of Vancouver.
North Vancouver: the cozy one
Start with lattes and a two-player game at Contrarian's Game Cafe in Salmon Creek, grab dinner nearby, then bowl a few frames at Hazel Dell Lanes.
Tips for a Better Rainy Day Date in Vancouver
- Book early on rainy weekends. Escape rooms, axe lanes, cooking classes, and bowling fill up fast when the forecast turns wet.
- Check hours before you go. Many venues close earlier on weeknights or are closed certain days.
- Group it by area. Picking venues close together means less time driving in the rain.
- Keep a "rain kit" in the car. An umbrella, a dry pair of socks, and a towel go a long way.
- Beat the winter blues. Short, gray days are real here. Planning regular date nights helps, and so do the tips in my Vancouver winter darkness survival guide.
